Wipro Little Genius 7110

My previous post was about winning the Wipro Coding contest. They had some problems with their laptop stock and i received the laptop only few days back. A month long wait was worth it. The laptop is really cool. The laptop is of make Wipro, its called the Wipro Little Genius 7110. Click here for the official site. Here goes the specs.

- Intel Celeron 1.72 GHz , 512 MB RAM, 80GB, wide screen display, 1.3 mp webcam, bluetooth, 5 in 1 memory card reader, DVD writer etc, Windows XP home edition.

As soon as i got the laptop i downloaded the latest Ubuntu release Feisty Fawn. The installation was very simple as usual. I had some issues with the drivers. I had to do little of googling and sort out the problems. I thought i’ll post it here. These are the problems and the solutions I found.

1. Problem with resolution: I wasn’t able to get the 1280×800 resolution of the widescreen. it gave me only the default options of 1024×768.

Solution: I got the solution from here. The matter under the heading “Intel Graphics driver (i810) won’t use high screen resolutions”

The steps to do:
- install software “915resolution”

2. Problem with Synaptic Touch pad: the touch pad was working fine. but i wasn’t able to use the scroll area in the touch pad.

Solution: I got the solution from here.

The steps to do:
- add few lines in the / etc / X11 / xorg.conf file.

3. Wireless card not detected: Solved it by just installing the linux-restricted-modules

The steps to do:
- apt-get install –reinstall linux-restricted-modules-$(uname -r)

4. Audio Problem: There was a problem with the sound. On every reboot it would work but each time sound is played there would be a humming sound too, and when volume was adjusted the sound would go. Got the solution from here.

The steps to do:
- Install alsa drivers
- add a line to the end of / etc / modeprobe.d / alsa-base
- the line is: sda-hda-intel model=3stack

So things are looking great. Haven’t got the webcam working yet. Will post about it as and when i’m able to make it work. Thanks to the knowledgeable Linux users all around who makes working with linux so easy.
